Six Mile Grove perform in the Radio Heartland studio
by Mike Pengra
August 23, 2019
The southern Minnesota band Six Mile Grove recently celebrated 20 years together. The group, started by a couple of brothers in Lyle, Minn., released their seventh album, Million Birds, this past January and have had a busy summer with gigs all over the Midwest and at the Minnesota State Fair (on Aug. 26 and 27).
Brandon Sampson and his brother Brian started the band in high school with guitarist Barry Nelson, and they were joined a few years later by Dezi Wallace from nearby Austin, Minn. They added John Wheeler more recently on pedal steel. The focus of the group has always been original music, and the new album is all original. Their history also includes a tour with legendary guitarist Bob Wooten of Johnny Cash's band.
Six Mile Grove stopped into our studio this summer to play a few songs from the new record and to talk about two decades on and off the road.
