Prince's last release in the 1980s is an album that stands out in his catalog. It's the soundtrack for Tim Burton's 1989 film Batman.

Quickly assembled in six weeks, the Batman soundtrack was a combination of rapid inspiration and a reimagination of some tracks from Prince's deep archive. For example, "Vicki Waiting," about the character Vicki Vale, is rumored to have originally been titled "Anna is Waiting," about a past love of Prince's.

Batman showed that Prince could easily deliver the pop goods to movie goers worldwide with "Partyman," but still challenges fans with funkier-sounding outings like the elastic opening cut "The Future" and the eclectic hit "Batdance."

This fun and funky soundtrack can't be dismissed as a novelty record. It remains one of his top five bestselling albums and a fantastic accompaniment to a hit movie of the 1980s.
