In what might be the coolest news story of the last few weeks...Florida has officially started piloting the release of genetically modified mosquitoes in hopes of reducing the spread of disease.

The British-based biotechnology firm Oxitec, along with the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District have launched the project which aims to reduce the spread of dengue, yellow fever and the Zika virus. Only female mosquitos bite humans and spread disease, so these genetically modified bugs are males that pass on a gene that kills female offspring before they mature. And they glow fluorescent so they can be identified and studied.

Oxitec has tried this in Brazil, Panama, the Cayman Islands and Malaysia with a 90 percent success rate.
