Coffee Break: One year later
by Jill Riley and Anna Weggel
May 25, 2021
One year ago, George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer, sparking unrest in the Twin Cities and mass protests across the world.
The intersection where he was killed - 38th and Chicago - will be transformed today into an outdoor festival with food, children's activities, and musical performances. A candlelight vigil of the site begins tonight at 8 pm, and this afternoon the Gov. Tim Walz is asking people to observe 9:29 seconds of silence to begin at 1 pm.
MPR News will present special reports and relevant discussion throughout the day, and tonight from 8- 10 pm you can hear a special episode of The Message featuring songs of protest, grief, rage, frustration and hope.
