Park Hye Jin, "Y DON'T U"

The South Korean artist who calls Los Angeles home has been pointed to as an artist to watch by pretty much every outlet (Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NME, The Guardian, etc) after the release of her EP last summer. The new single is a heartbreak meditation that you can dance to. Hypnotic with its repetition, it keeps adding new elements so it never bores.

Joy Oladokun, "breathe again"

On her Twitter, Joy Oladokun refers to herself as the "trap Tracy Chapman," but that simplifies her ability to jump genres. The Nashville upstart has one foot in the Country world (Maren Morris is featured on a track on Oladokun's new album), and she can create dance jams just as easily. Oladokun's Americana roots are showcased in "breathe again," a single that also shows up on her new album, In Defense of My Own Happiness, out June 4.

The Linda Lindas, "Racist, Sexist Boy"

Viral success? Check. Topical lyrics? Check. Los Angeles's The Linda Lindas have the perfect punk ethos: take the political topic of the moment, mix it with the personal, and make it loud. The young group has already been signed to Epitaph Records.

Olivia Rodrigo, "brutal"

Well, if you've been paying attention to the music landscape in 2021, then you may have already stumbled upon the name Olivia Rodrigo. This has been one of the most anticipated albums of the year after several of the songs from the child actor went viral (and her friendship with Taylor Swift didn't hurt). Rodrigo has been compared to The Breeders, Alanis Morissette, Elvis Costello, and Veruca Salt — that's the sort of comparison you can't ignore. Don't let the Disney pedigree scare you off; this is a great first offering from a young artist.

King Pari, "Mary" (feat. Velvet Negroni)

Minnesota artists Cameron Kinghorn (Nooky Jones) and Joe Paris Christensen (PHO) may have left us for the sunny Los Angeles coastline, but they haven't forgotten their roots. On their new single, "Mary," there's a feature from fellow Minnesotan, Velvet Negroni. The soulful and funky jam is exactly what the duo do best — getting things hot and sticky.

UV-TV, "Back to Nowhere"

The New York Times included New Yorkers UV-TV in its recent article, "Women Are Making The Best Rock Music Today." The DIY scensters UV-TV have that same easy-breezy quality to their music that The Jesus and Mary Chain brought. It's the perfect sound to put on for an afternoon outside on a sunny day.
