This week, we get brand-spanking-new music from Austin, Texas, indie rockers Spoon. We also hear new releases from Alex Lahey and from Elvis Costello, as well as new sounds from London’s Shygirl, Atlanta’s Curtis Harding, and Minnesota’s own Muun Bato.
Spoon, “The Hardest Cut”
Early in 2020, Spoon were in Austin, Texas, with an album nearly 80 percent complete — but when the pandemic hit, the studio sessions came to an abrupt end. Now, a year-and-a-half later, the band are ready to tease their new album, Lucifer on the Couch, coming out on Feb. 11, 2022. A long time coming, but "The Hardest Cut" is a rocker for old-school fans.
Muun Bato, “Sound Cisdumb”
Muun Bato, a band full of Minnesota music scene-makers, were one of City Pages (RIP) last Picked to Click bands, No. 2 in 2020. The psych-rockers’ newest album, Paraphonic Vapors, pulls in some dreamy, swirling sounds and spaced-out vocals. Check out their latest, "Sound Cisdumb," just before they'll be joining The Current this Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Distilling Co.'s First Annual Hallowhiskey Party.
Alex Lahey, “Spike The Punch”
A punchy hook helps ground the new single from Australian rocker Alex Lahey. She's an artist who can write a confessional song that's entirely relatable — and with the help of Carlos de la Garza (Paramore, Cherry Glazerr, Best Coast), it is a danceable confession.
Curtis Harding, “Can’t Hide It”
Soulful sounds that could have come straight from the '70s fill the new album from Curtis Harding. The Atlanta-based artist is releasing If Words Were Flowers on November 5, and the latest single, "Can't Hide It," is a joy-filled jam about a solid relationship.
Shygirl, “Cleo”
Dance DJ Shygirl has joined other buzzy DJs (Slowthai and Mura Masa) on several remixes and singles in the past few years. The London club DJ has steadily built a name for herself and was recently named one of Pitchfork's "Artists Shaping Where Music Will Go From Here.” Shygirl’s track "Cleo" brings the glamor of '90s club sounds, a drop of Madonna's "Vogue" spoken-word focus, with plenty of dramatic flair.
Elvis Costello, “Magnificent Hurt”
There's an urgency to "Magnificent Hurt" the first new single from Elvis Costello and The Imposters' album The Boy Named If (out January 14, 2022). According to Costello, the new album is individual moments “That take us from the last days of a bewildered boyhood to that mortifying moment when you are told to stop acting like a child - which for most men (and perhaps a few gals too) can be any time in the next fifty years."
