Father John Misty returns with his first new music since 2018’s God’s Favorite Customer. Also, hear a Yoko Ono-inspired collaboration between David Byrne and Yo La Tengo, plus new tracks from lifelong pals Let’s Eat Grandma, Minneapolis band DNM, Radiohead side project The Smile, and ‘90s inflected Widowspeak.

Father John Misty, “Funny Girl”

It seems like Father John Misty has spent his downtime listening to some Frank Sinatra and Harry Nilsson. The moody singer is channeling some smokey, shadowy, dank bar with one-spotlight vibes on "Funny Girl." The new album, Chloë and the Next 20th Century, will be out in April.

The Smile, “You Will Never Work In Television Again”

Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead have often found themselves experimenting outside of their main project — sometimes together, sometimes solo. For their latest venture, they brought in Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, and they are utilizing him to the fullest. Skinner’s pulsing beat lays the groundwork for Thom Yorke's punky vocal delivery.

DNM, “Falling Out”

Funky indie sounds are coming out of the Twin Cities from newly formed DNM. Solo artist Moise joins DeCarlo Jackson (Hippo Campus), Joey Hays (multi-instrumentalist for Papa mbye, Velvet Negroni, Lupin, Raffaella, and King Pari), and Nate Fikru for a song that's ready-made for a weekend hang.

Let’s Eat Grandma, “Happy New Year”

The British duo of Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth, aka Let's Eat Grandma, have been friends since childhood, and they formed the band back in 2013. However, their newest music reflects that they are changing and growing, and it also reflects the stress that that put on the band and their friendship. According to Walton, "I’d been struggling to come to terms with the fact that our relationship had changed, but as the song and time progresses, I come to accept that it couldn’t stay the way it was when we were kids forever, and start to view it as a positive thing — because now we have been able to grow into our own individual selves."

David Byrne and Yo La Tengo, “Who Has Seen the Wind?”

Covers and tribute albums seem unlikely to stop any time soon, and the latest is a nod to Yoko Ono, curated by Death Cab for Cutie’s Benjamin Gibbard. Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono will feature Flaming Lips, Sharon Van Etten, Japanese Breakfast, and, of course, Death Cab for Cutie. The first single is a thick-syrup daydream from David Byrne and Yo La Tengo with their version of "Who Has Seen The Wind?" From Gibbard, "It is my sincere hope that a new crop of Yoko Ono fans fall in love with her songwriting due in some small part to this album we have put together."

Widowspeak, “Everything Is Simple”

After releasing an album in 2020, Widowspeak are already pushing out new music from their new album, The Jacket, which will be out in March. Fans of The Sundays and Mazzy Star will dig the serene and innocent vocal delivery with the almost prog-rock instrumentation behind it. The single, "Everything Is Simple," is easy to relate to with the core message, "Everything is simple till it's not."
