This week’s Friday Five is rooted in Minnesota but takes excursions to Wisconsin, New Mexico, and the global party that is a Pitbull tour. Do you know a Minnesota music video you’d like to see featured in the biweekly Friday Five? E-mail fridayfive@mpr.org.

Cloud Cult, “One Way Out of a Hole”

Over six years since The Seeker, Cloud Cult are preparing to release their 11th studio slab. Metamorphosis is due out on March 4; although it was largely written and recorded in the band’s current home state of Wisconsin, given the band’s Hinkley/Owatonna/Duluth roots, you’re darn right we’re still going to claim them as local.

In Jeff D. Johnson’s video for lead single “One Way Out of a Hole,” frontman Craig Minowa is outstanding in his field, contemplating a mirror that he may be hoping someone comes along and turns into a painting. Meanwhile, a hitchhiker takes a ride across the Hennepin Avenue Bridge in the bed of a teal truck with a mysteriously morphing driver. Talk about a Cult classic!

Lucia Sarmiento on her musical journey

Lucia Sarmiento has been on our radar since she played an After Hours show in our studio with host Andrea Swensson circa 2015. She’s been a highlight of the local jazz scene ever since, and this past summer she went worldwide - in every sense of the word. In this conversation with her friend (and former Minnesotan), percussionist Paul Jennings, Sarmiento talks about how she traveled from her birth country of Peru to the United States to up her jazz game. The longtime Minnesotan also describes the opportunity that led to her joining Pitbull’s band, meeting a Saudi Arabian prince’s camel, and more. Pro tip: be prepared. (And get ready for her solo debut album, which she plans to finish this year.)

Perth, “Halcyon”

And now for something completely different: Minnesota “metalcore” band Perth bring the noise in an appropriately frenetic video for their new single “Halcyon,” from their EP Revenant. It’s a journey.

Sarah Streitz, “He Only Drinks Wine When I’m Buyin’”

Minneapolis-based Americana artist Sarah Streitz filmed this clip for a jaunty track from the Cut Flowers album during “a little sabbatical” in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Sounds of Blackness, “Time for Reparations”

Minnesota gospel/R&B greats Sounds of Blackness have a lot of laurels already, but nonetheless it was exciting to hear word that they’ve been nominated for an NAACP Image award in the Outstanding Gospel/Christian Song category. The song, “Time for Reparations,” was one of two they performed for us during last summer’s LineCheck series; you can do them a solid by voting now at the awards’ website.
