Celebrated on-air host Mary Lucia has announced plans to leave The Current. For more than 17 years, Lucia has been a weekday afternoon fixture on the station. She was one of The Current’s initial hires announced ahead of its launch in January of 2005. Over her time with Minnesota Public Radio, her voice has been a defining part of its sonic identity.

Each weekday afternoon, her “No Apologies” song picks have surfaced a wide spectrum of music even further outside of her engaging and eclectic sets. An adept interviewer, Lucia has conducted compelling conversations with legends such as Johnny Rotten, Tori Amos, Trent Reznor, Chrissie Hynde, and too many more to name. (View her content archive here.) Lucia has also brought cultural and artistic criticism to the station via her “Listen to Looch” segments, vocally supported the local music community, and graced the stage for all manner of live events for The Current.

Lucia notes that she is proud of her career in radio in this market, and that, “Starting The Current 17 years ago was a joy.” Lucia plans to continue voice work in the future via voices.com.

Lucia’s final on-air shift on The Current will be Thursday, April 21, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“She has long been more than a DJ to music fans,” says program director Jim McGuinn. “She’s been a friend, playing her favorite records and opening her heart to our listeners, who have responded with deep appreciation. She’s been recognized as City Pages’ Reader’s Choice Best DJ nearly every year of The Current’s existence, and been at the mic for hundreds of memorable sessions, conversations, and interviews. She created and hosted the live event and talk show FakeBook, crafted hundreds of “Listen to Looch” videos, and after approximately 3,867 weekday 4 p.m. “No Apologies” picks, fans and friends have a few days left to celebrate and honor Mary’s work at The Current.”
