Festival merch doesn't always stand the test of time: T-shirts fade, records get scratched, and sunglasses crack. This year at Rock the Garden, we're solving that with Ink the Garden.

A total of eight lucky winners will receive a tattoo during the event from the highly sought after Minneapolis tattoo artist Heather Kim, and will also receive a pair of tickets to Rock the Garden.

Rock the Garden is Saturday, June 11, at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The lineup includes Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Sleater-Kinney, LOW, beabadoobee, DāM-FunK, Bombino, and Divide & Dissolve. Find tickets here.

Kim has designed five exclusive tattoos for the event, shown below, inspired by Rock the Garden’s sculptural surroundings and the day’s lineup.

Here are Kim’s descriptions of each design.

“Lucky Hahn/Cock Foot” (top left): A lucky crystal bundled with sage, Katherina Fritsch’s rooster’s foot, and guitar pick 

“Rock on Harebell” (center): Witchy fingers posing “rock on,” with Barry Flanagan’s bunny rabbit leaping through a black hole wrist.

“Put a Bird on it Calder” (top right): A spin off Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein’s “put a bird on it” from her infamous Portlandia skit on Alexander Calder’s “The Spinner.”

“SK Cherry Spoon” (bottom right): A garden variety of Sleater-Kinney’s snake logo intertwined with Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen’s iconic “Spoonbridge and Cherry.” 

“Heart Song” (bottom left): What live music does to my heart.

Entries open Friday, June 3, and winners will be announced on Wednesday, June 8 during The Current Morning Show.

Winners: All must be 18+, and show valid ID. All tattoo appointments with Heather Kim (cash value: $250) must be redeemed during Rock the Garden at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden next to Walker Art Center on Saturday, June 11, 2022, between 1 p.m.-10 p.m. Winners will be notified for appointment scheduling via email.

The Ink the Garden tent will be located with event sponsor tents near The Garden Stage.

The artist will have discretion in dictating design, placement and size of tattoos, as well as the time slot available for the tattoo that day. Winners will choose from predetermined black ink designs shown above. Appointments will not be rescheduled.

All legal and insurance responsibility for the tattoos, health department licensing, ID check, and releases and paperwork with tattoo recipients, etc., will be managed by the artist.
