This week, hear the latest from Bartees Strange and from Cautious Clay, as well as collaborations between Danger Mouse and Black Thought, and Diana Ross and Tame Impala. Discover London rapper Lava La Rue, and hear a new track from MMYYKK ahead of his performance at Afropunk Music Festival in Minneapolis this weekend.

Bartees Strange, “Wretched”

The new album from Bartees Strange, Farm to Table, is out on Friday. The highly anticipated album will be a mix of genres from the talented artist, whose love for The National gained him his early attention, but the mixture of indie, hip hop, punk, and beautiful vocals sustained that early glow. His latest single is about appreciating the people who stuck with him, as he said, “This song is about the people who’ve always stood by me, even when I was wretched. When I was trying to be something other than myself — they saw me even through that and held me down. Folks from past lives, and folks who’ll play a big part in my future — I'm grateful for them and the love they’ve poured into me. This song is for and about them."

Danger Mouse and Black Thought, “No Gold Teeth”

Producer Danger Mouse and rapper Black Thought are putting out a collaborative album, Cheat Codes, on August 12. This is the first hip-hop project from Danger Mouse since 2005’s Dangerdoom with MF Doom. The song is built off a funky blues sample of "Stop," a song written by Jerry Ragovoy and Mort Shuman and first performed and released by Howard Tate in 1967 (the sample Danger Mouse uses here is from Hugh Masekela's 1968 version).

Diana Ross and Tame Impala, “Turn Up The Sunshine”

This summer at the Minnesota State Fair, Diana Ross will be coming and bringing a whole new roundup of disco-ball tunes with her. One of those is "Turn Up The Sunshine," a Jack Antonoff-produced glitter bomb of happiness featuring Tame Impala.

Lava La Rue, “Hi-Fidelity” feat. Biig Piig

London rapper, designer, and founding member of arts collective NINE8 is a rising star. Her lo-fi, experimental hip hop has been a slow development since she started making music at 16; now with her creative beats and collaborations, she's ready to step into her own.

Cautious Clay, “Puffer”

Over a driving drum beat and swirling guitar solos, Cautious Clay discusses solitude and growth on the song, "Puffer."

MMYYKK, “Cold Hustle”

Afropunk Music Festival is coming to Minneapolis this weekend, and there are going to be a number of local acts showcasing the talent of our fair state. One at the forefront is MMYYKK, the afro-futurist makes thought-provoking jams that are sure to be a highlight of the fest.
