Earlier this year, Jack White released the bombastic rocker of an album, Fear of the Dawn. Its gentler twin, Entering Heaven Alive, is not a reflection, but a reason for allowing negative space to breathe. It proves that sometimes less is more.

That’s not to say that this is a simple album — if anything, White is showboating his ability to float between genres with jazzy piano and guitar solos on “I’ve Got You Surrounded” to the intimacy of “Love is Selfish.”

For fans of old White Stripes-era Jack White, this might just be the album to bring you back into the fold.
