Ezra Furman - All of Us FlamesANTI- / Bella Union

At SXSW earlier this year, while Ezra Furman shared songs from her new album All of Us Flames, she spoke of her admiration for Ronnie Spector. Spector was a rocker and spirited musician who was in a constant battle to be recognized for her talent as a Black woman making rocking music. As a trans artist, Furman felt a kinship in that feeling of being on the fringes of the music industry – rattling a cage.

In “Forever in Sunset” Furman sings about “A burning urge to dig for warmth” – the animalistic instinct for comfort that comes so easy to some, while fought for by others, and the building anxiety to make others understand a daily battle of existence. For Furman, it comes with squealing guitars, thumping drums, and vocals that deliver heart-wrenching lyrics with a raw and ferocious bite.

At the root all of us are rattling a cage, all of us are looking for warmth, and maybe we can open our eyes to those around us that are having to do it a little harder.
