This week, catch up on the latest songs from Björk, Suede, Special Interest and Deerhoof, and discover the sounds of San Diego band Thee Sacred Souls and Minnesota-by-way-of-Ecuador singer/producer Luigi Franco.
Björk, “Atopos”
Björk is a true visionary and a singular artist, so when she announces that she's making an album that's an ode to mushrooms, not only does it make sense, but I'm instantly excited. And the first offering doesn't disappoint; “Atopos” is a pulsating, breathing entity of a song that binds dissonant orchestration, trip-hop beats, and Björk’s intriguing vocal delivery to implore the listener into connection.
Thee Sacred Souls, “Easier Said Than Done”
Something about smooth, heartbreaking soul on a hot summer day just works. Thee Sacred Souls are a trio out of southern California, and they just released their debut self-titled album, produced by Daptones co-founder Gabriel Roth. It’s full of the muted sunshine sounds of ‘60s soul, which you can hear on their song “Easier Said Than Done.”
Special Interest, “Midnight Legend” feat. Mykki Blanco
New Orleans punk rockers, Special Interest, are hitting the dance floor on their latest song “Midnight Legend.” It’s a little bit disco, a little bit industrial — full of fog and hazy echos.
Suede, “That Boy on the Stage”
Veterans of the Britpop era, Suede, are back with a new album, Autofiction. The ‘90s act released their last album in 2018, and they continue to make rock music that feels immediate with an intensity that belies their age.
Deerhoof, “My Lovely Cat!”
Sounding a bit like Cibo Matto of the '90s, the latest from Deerhoof is a sweet and energetic song about a cute cat. Written and sung in Japanese by band leader Satomi Matsuzaki, the song was inspired by a cute cat on the internet — and sometimes that's really all you need.
Luigi Franco, “Igual”
Having moved from Guayaquil, Ecuador, to Minneapolis in 2018, producer/singer Luigi Franco debuted with his three-song EP Igual in July. The title track — a simple composition with layers of deep synths, strong reverb and dreamy vocals — proves sometimes less is more. A fan of experimental sounds and melodic voices, Franco is inspired by artists like Aurora and Years and Years, plus indie bands from his home country. He is currently in Ecuador promoting his project and a new song that is on the way. – Natalia Toledo
