This week, we see new music from Scottish trio Young Fathers and from Minnesota’s Graveyard Club, as well as collaborations between Andrew Bird and Phoebe Bridgers; Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey; and Anderson .Paak (as NxWorries) and H.E.R. We also share a new song from New-York-by-way-of-Texas artist Hannah Jadagu.
Andrew Bird, “I felt a Funeral, in my Brain” feat. Phoebe Bridgers
Here’s a haunting song to kick off the Halloween week of Music You Should Know. Inspired by the Emily Dickinson poem of the same name, the song “I felt a Funeral, in my Brain” sees Andrew Bird and Phoebe Bridgers pass the vocals back and forth and harmonize beautifully. The poem was a big inspiration for Bird’s recent album, Inside Problems, so it’s wonderful to see him going back to the source with this new song.
Young Fathers, “I Saw”
The fourth album from Scottish trio Young Fathers is on the way. The entire album, Heavy Heavy, was just the three core band members in their basement; they call it “a mood, or it could describe the smoothed granite of bass that supports the sound… or it could be a nod to the natural progression of boys to grown men and the inevitable toll of living, a joyous burden, relationships, family, the natural momentum of a group that has been around long enough to witness massive changes.”
Taylor Swift, “Snow On The Beach” feat. Lana Del Rey
I nearly ignored it, but you know what? No. We are going to highlight a song from the new Taylor Swift album, Midnights. Just in case you missed it, the self-proclaimed “geriatric pop star” came out with new music. It’s an emotional, funny and self-deprecating album produced with longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff (the additional 3am Edition of the album features some gems from producer Aaron Dessner — with additional vocals from Justin Vernon). One of the highlights is “Snow on the Beach,” which brings in some backing vocals from Lana Del Rey (another frequent collaborator of Jack Antonoff), and the song is a swirling dream that would have been comfortable on a Del Rey album.
Graveyard Club, “Halloween”
Another track for your Halloween playlist, this one from local act Graveyard Club. The moody Minnesota band put out Moonflower earlier this year. In a press release, the band said, “at its core, Moonflower is ‘an attempt to balance the longing for yesterday, and coming to grips with today…in all its ecstatic highs and defeating lows.’”
Hannah Jadagu, “Say It Now”
Imagine you're in high school, writing and producing songs on your phone using a pretty minimal setup. You upload your music, and suddenly, the Sub Pop label is on the phone asking to sign you, wanting to release your homemade EP. That's the story of Hannah Jadagu. The young artist from Texas, who now calls New York home, had success with the release of the EP, What Is Going On?, and she now has a studio-produced new song "Say It Now."
NxWorries, “Where I Go” feat. H.E.R.
Anderson .Paak seems to be everywhere these last few years, and he’s returned to a project, NxWorries, with his friend Knxwledge. Apparently, there’s an album to be released down the line, but with no release date or title, we’ll have to do with a new song that may appear on it, “Where I Go” feat. H.E.R. It’s smooth, laid back, and cool, futuristic R&B.
