The Current announces final New Hot shows

The Current
The CurrentSara Fish for MPR

November 22, 2022

The best ideas come from “try-its,” which is how New Hot became a recurring program on The Current more than a decade ago. It has been a privilege to share thousands of new tracks with you on The Current and amplify artists who are without a platform. After more than 500 episodes of New Hot, we're sunsetting the program. This change shifts our focus to new ways to help you discover music

Fun fact: New Hot was named after a music category in our library — think of it as a section of your record collection — and was never meant to be a weekly show. When the program started airing weekly, new albums came out on Tuesdays. Each Monday show was centered around new full-length releases.  Today, new album releases have moved to Fridays and new singles drop on a daily basis. As the industry has evolved, the spirit of New Hot has expanded to other parts of The Current. Our dedication to bringing you the newest tracks of the week continues with daily additions to our playlist, new services like Carbon Sound, and our newest weekly feature, "Music You Should Know."

I offer my sincere gratitude to everyone who has listened over the years, reached out to share their love and curiosity of new music, and the heartfelt emails that fuel our purpose as an independent source for connecting with artists and community.

Thanks to all the members of MPR for making ambitious programming possible on The Current.  The final episode of New Hot will air at 10 p.m. on Friday, December 16, with a celebration of the best releases of 2022.

Yours truly,
