Top 10 Songs of 2022

Bad Bunny, Chencho Corleone - “Me Porto Bonito”

After a very hard couple of years for us all, our beloved Benito (Bad Bunny) gifted us an amazing album Un Verano Sin Ti. Bad Bunny is arguably the biggest artist in the world right now, especially in the Spanish speaking world. Source: This album is the first Spanish-speaking album nominated for Album of the Year Grammy. His songs are fun, sassy, sexy, and sometimes very emo. A perfect balance.

Amber Mark - “What It Is”

I am a huge Amber Mark fan. This year she released an incredible album, Three Dimensions Deep, which I super recommend. She is truly an amazing songwriter, producer, and singer. “What It Is” is definitely a song I sang loudly all year round, especially towards the end of the song when there’s a switch up that is really fun.

Oxlade - “KU LO SA”

There is so much to say about this song but mostly, I am completely obsessed. And so was half of the world! Oxalde released this single on A COLORS SHOW, a YouTube channel. His spontaneous movements during the performance were perfect for TikTok and folks really took that and ran with it. It became a viral hit that way. This song just really lifts my whole spirit.

Beyoncé - “Move feat. Grace Jones & Tems”

Of course, I had to include at least one song from Renaissance, Beyoncé’s incredible album. I have conflicting feelings about the way Beyoncé is worshipped by some, BUT this album is truly incredible, especially as a DJ. The fusion of afrobeat and house is literally what I do when I DJ live, and the vibes I am always attracted to naturally. Which is why “Move” is my standout track. It also features the incredible Grace Jones?!

Smino - “Pro Freak” feat. Doechii, Fatman Scoop

Smino is my favorite rapper right now, hands down. What I love about this artist is that no one else sounds like him. The music he is creating is so unique and so complex. One song might shift and morph in such a way that you can’t help but love it. His last album Luv 4 Rent reminds of Outkast sonically.

Girl Ultra - “Para q te acuerdes de mi”

If you are unfamiliar with Girl Ultra, get with the program. She is an incredible artist from Mexico, known for her sultry R&B tracks. On her latest album, EL SUR, she has a lot of house and garage inspired music which I love. Girl Ultra is doing something different and trying new sounds, which I personally really appreciate.

Sango, asante - “Tongue Tied”

If you are familiar with Soulection, the producer and DJ collective, then you might have heard of Sango. Best known for his love of Brazilian baile funk, Sango has been one of my favorite producers for a while. His album Great Lakes Influence explores house music and all the different ways it has changed from place to place, beginning with Chicago, making its way to Detroit and South Africa with amapiano. Sango is from the midwest and reps that proudly, hence the name of the album.

Sunni Colón - “Universe 4 Two”

Sunni Colón has been one of my favorite artists since 2018 when I first heard his album Satin Psicodelic. He never disappoints and his 2022 release JúJú & The Flowerbug was long awaited by fans like myself. If you are into romantic, smooth vibes please give Sunni a listen. You won’t regret it!

Tufawon - “About That Life”

This year my friend Tufawon released Until The Sun Comes Up after a heartbreak. I am inspired by the way he was able to turn a painful situation into this project. He tapped into his Boricua roots and leaned into singing over reggaeton and dancehall. It is full of summer jams, especially “About That Life” which gets stuck in my head constantly.

Karol G - “Provenza”

One of my top songs of 2022. Karol G has made a name for herself in the reggaeton world, being a prominent woman in the industry which has always been historically male-dominated. In this more mellow tune, she talks about reaching out to an old lover and her voice really shines, which I love.

Honorable Mentions

Asake - “Sungba” feat. Burna Boy (Remix)

Kali Uchis – “No Hay Ley”

Paramore - “This Is Why”

Kehlani - “wish I never”

Foudeqush, Ludwig Goransson – “Con La Brisa (Wakanda Forever)”
