Hear the latest releases from the New Pornographers, Belle and Sebastian, Public Image Ltd and Altin Gün while discovering the music of artists Black Belt Eagle Scout and Libianca.
The New Pornographers, “Really Really Light”
Canadian supergroup The New Pornographers (whose members include A.C. Newman, Neko Case and Dan Bejar) have returned with new music. There's an album on the way, Continue as a Guest, which will be out March 31, and the first new song (written by Bejar and Newman) sees the collective buzzing with energy.
Belle and Sebastian, “I Don’t Know What You See In Me”
A surprise album drop from Scottish indie darlings Belle and Sebastian comes this Friday (January 13). The album finds the band in a jubilant spot, jumping from disco to indie rock in a little under an hour. Late Developers gets an early spin in full on The Current this Thursday, January 12, at 9 p.m. (Central), but "I Don't Know What You See In Me" is already out, and lead singer Stuart Murdoch said he really "let [his] voice swoop and soar in ways that it maybe hasn’t before." Note: Listen to The Current on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 9 p.m. Central for an early listen to the entire album.
Public Image Ltd, “Hawaii”
Johnny Rotten and Eurovision weren't two words I ever imagined to be in the same sentence in a positive way, but pull out your 2023 Bingo sheet, because here we are. The Sex Pistols' frontman, John Lydon, has teamed up with his Public Image Ltd bandmates to try and represent Ireland in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. The somber and sweetly melodic "Hawaii" is written for Lydon's wife, Nora Forster, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. In a statement, Lydon said the song was "dedicated to everyone going through tough times on the journey of life, with the person they care for the most."
Black Belt Eagle Scout, “Nobody”
Black Belt Eagle Scout (aka Swinomish Indian Tribal Community-based singer/songwriter/guitarist Katherine Paul) wanted to create a song to share some representation for a younger generation. Paul said, “When I was growing up, I didn’t have very many Native role models to look to on TV or the radio ... with Native representation in music and television slowly growing, I often ask myself where I stand within representation in music and how I want to be seen. This song is about the relationship I have with my own representation in music.”
Altin Gün, “Rakiya Su Katamam”
The Turkish psychedelic rock band, Altin Gün, might make their music in Amsterdam, but on their new record they maintain a sound that is firmly rooted in Middle Eastern sounds.
Libianca, “People”
"When you started rapping, I left my body and almost passed out," raved popstar Ariana Grande to Libianca on season 21 of NBC’s The Voice. Since earning high praise from all four judges on the hit TV show, this Roseville, Minn., native has been bubbling up in worldwide popularity via Spotify and social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Her style is a combination of pop, Afrobeat, R&B, and hip-hop with relatable lyrics themed around human interaction and development. Fans of Rhianna, Doja Cat, and H.E.R. will especially enjoy the similar finesse of Libianca. – Diane
