How do you carry on after a great loss? That was a big question for Dave Gahan and Martin Gore when Depeche Mode’s balancing force and keyboardist Andy “Fletch” Fletcher died suddenly while the band was working on what would become their new album, Memento Mori.

That heavy question hangs over the album in a cloud of discontent and makes for deep contemplation. Much like the album title – Latin for “remember you will die” – that contemplation of death created a new vigor for life.
