New Jersey rockers the Gaslight Anthem return with new music after a yearslong hiatus. Hear new music from Beach House, Dawn Richard, and the solo debut of Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, as well as the latest project from the Replacements’ Tommy Stinson, and discover rising artist Hannah Jadagu.
The Gaslight Anthem, “Positive Charge”
“How I've missed you, and feelin' good to be alive” is how New Jersey band, The Gaslight Anthem, return with their first new music in nine years. The band’s song, “Positive Charge,” is their attempt to inject some hope and joy in the possibilities for the future. It’s a note from an “old friend” to their listeners, and it does feel jubilant — full of fast guitar runs and a thumping drum beat.
Beach House, “Devil’s Pool”
What started as a Record Store Day special release from Beach House, the Become EP, is now seeing a wider release. The David Lynchian band released five songs they held back from their last release, Once Twice Melody. These are not floor-cutter throwaways, they are just as beautiful and decadent as chocolate mousse with gold flake. It’s a perfect addition to something delicious you didn’t realize you needed until you have it.
Tommy Stinson’s Cowboys in the Campfire, “Dream”
Tommy Stinson has built an impressive résumé: founding member of The Replacements, late joiner of Guns N’ Roses, Bash and Pop, Soul Asylum, and a gun for hire in the studio for a number of bands. His latest project, Cowboys in the Campfire, sees him teaming up with frequent collaborator Chip Roberts (and X’s Joe Doe for several tracks) on a debut album, WRONGER, coming out June 2. Stinson calls it an “experimental record” that leans into country and folk music in a way he’s never done before.
Dawn Richard, “Bubblegum”
A bubbly new song from the multi-talented Dawn Richard is the pop R&B you need to get ready for a weekend out. The music video dance is already drawing copycats, but the song is dance worthy on its own. Discordant sirens blare and, as Richard said, “full of sass that only a New Orleans King can have.”
Bethany Cosentino, “It’s Fine”
Bethany Cosentino is leaving the Best Coast behind. OK, no, she’s not leaving California, but she is putting the band Best Coast on indefinite hiatus and going off on her own with a solo record, Natural Disaster, coming out July 28. As Cosentino said, “Life is too short to not give yourself what you feel you need and want. I am excited about being just Bethany Cosentino for a while and figuring out who I am outside of the ‘Bethany from Best Coast’ box I’ve lived in for such a long time.” Listen to the exploration with the new song, “It’s Fine.”
Hannah Jadagu, “What You Did”
The young musician got signed to Sub Pop right out of high school and released her debut EP, What Is Going On? (which was recorded entirely on her iPhone). She’s back with her debut full length, Aperture, which will be out May 19. Juggling college and her music career in New York, her sound brings to mind a decade of music she wasn’t alive to hear originally: the 90s. It brings in some shoegaze, some garage rock, and some sweet pop on her song, “What You Did.”
