On June 5, we lost Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian singer whose vocals on “The Girl from Ipanema” became an influential part of bossa nova history. The performance is part of Getz/Gilberto, a legendary album in the canon of Latin American music heard and appreciated worldwide.

Today, let’s highlight Gilberto, as well as the sounds pioneered by other Latin American icons that have made an impact on popular music.
