August 08, 2023

Hip-hop has officially been a part of music for 50 years. This week, leading up to the 50th anniversary of a party featuring DJ Kool Herc held in the Bronx on August 11, 1973, we’ll devote each Coffee Break to a different decade of hip-hop music. Now, we’re moving on to the ‘90s.
In the ‘90s, hip-hop started to expand in ways we couldn’t imagine. From fashion to dance, and Hollywood movies to lyrical styles, hip-hop culture became mainstream culture. Producers began using audio editing software to create new styles and to sample beats. Rapping about political and social issues also began to take rise, and MTV brought us closer to the many rising stars.
For today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, which 1990s-era hip-hop songs do you want to hear?
