This week hear new music from Sleater-Kinney, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Dark Dark Dark, Debby Friday, Cleo Sol and U2

Sleater-Kinney — “Hell”

The iconic riotgrrrl band is back (continuing as the duo of Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein). They’ll have a new album called Little Rope out at the start of 2024, but are teasing their return with their first new song since 2021’s Path of Wellness. Inspired by the deaths of Brownstein’s mother and stepfather and produced by John Congleton in Portland, it feels like a return to the early days of the band.

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard — “Theia / The SIlver Cord / Set”

The prolific Australian band, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, have just shared music from their 25th album, The Silver Cord. This will be their second album of 2023 (off the heels of FIVE albums that came out last year!) and is about, “testing the boundaries of people’s attention spans when it comes to listening to music, perhaps.”

Dark Dark Dark — “Something Was There”

Dark Dark Dark has come back into the light light light — roughly 10 years after releasing their last album. On October 13, the beloved Minneapolis indie-folk band will release a three-song 10-inch vinyl, Something Was There. The EP’s first two songs were recorded “long ago.” On them, Dark Dark Dark’s tried-and-true organic, elegant instrumental bed lays a foundation for the music’s focal point — vocalist/pianist Nona Marie Invie. A spiritually rich and sensitively adept artist, Invie also features a moving nine-minute solo track on the EP. It serves as a preview for “bigger offering” to come. Catch Invie opening for their bandmate/indie-pop superstar Angel Olsen at First Avenue on November 29. -Diane, host of The Local Show

Debby Friday — “let u in”

Canadian artist, and now Polaris prize winner, Debby Friday shared a new song to celebrate. “Let U In” hits the high-hat in a rolling, spacey jam about opening up and finding something good in that vulnerability.

Cleo Sol — “There Will Be No Crying”

Part of the mysterious London collective SAULT, Cleo Sol is back with a smooth, sunny, and soothing new album, Gold. Her fourth album comes just on the heels of her album, Heaven, which came out a week prior. She gets comparisons thrown at her from D’Angelo to Sade, but the gentle breeze of her vocals is entirely her own.

U2 — “Atomic City”

To help kick off their residency in Las Vegas (in the MSG Sphere – if you haven’t seen any video of their performance I recommend checking it out, it’s awesome) the band released a new song that name drops Vegas. Their shows in Vegas kicked off September 29 and they are playing Achtung Baby in full. A statement about the song describes it as a “homage to the magnetic spirit of ’70’s post punk with a nod to Blondie, whose pioneering work with Giorgio Moroder inspired and influenced the band.”
