Today in 2019, Big Thief released their critically acclaimed third studio album, U.F.O.F. The folk-flavored collection of singer Adrianne Lenker’s tender melodies and the band’s acoustic arrangements was recorded in June 2018 at Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, Washington. The title track and “Cattails” are among the highlights. The record was one of the top-selling vinyl albums of the year, and was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

1958 - The popular disc jockey Alan Freed hosted a concert at the Boston Arena (a hockey rink) featuring Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly. Accounts vary, but the crowd rushed the stage at various times, and Freed kept imploring them to sit down. Freed was forced to stop the show, telling the crowd, "It looks like the Boston police don't want you to have a good time." Violence erupted and spilled over to the streets. Boston did not host another rock concert until 1964, when the Beatles came through.

1967 - The Hollies recorded “Carrie Anne.” The song reached No. 3 on the U.K. Singles Chart and was also a hit in the U.S. and Canada, peaking at No. 9 on both pop charts. It also reached No. 4 in the Irish charts. Fun fact: Actress Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix, Memento, Jessica Jones) was named by her mother in honor of the song, which was released three months before her birth.

1968 - Not to be outdone by the Beatles, the Beach Boys began an 18-date tour with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as the opening act. The plan backfired as half the dates had to be canceled due to lack of interest.

1976 - Paul McCartney's Wings Over America Tour opened in Fort Worth, Texas. It was his first U.S. concert appearance in a decade.

1976 - Aerosmith released their fourth studio album, Rocks. It features the singles "Back in the Saddle," "Last Child," and "Home Tonight.”

1982 - The Cure released their fourth studio album, Pornography. It features “The Hanging Garden.”

1983 - "Weird Al" Yankovic released his debut studio album, "Weird Al" Yankovic. It features the singles "My Bologna," "Another One Rides the Bus," and "Ricky."

1986 - The Rolling Stones peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart with Dirty Work. They also peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with their cover of "Harlem Shuffle."

1986 - The Silver Dollar City Tennessee amusement park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee was reopened as "Dollywood" after Dolly Parton took an ownership stake.

1988 - Sade released their third studio album, Stronger Than Pride. It features the singles "Love Is Stronger Than Pride," "Paradise," "Nothing Can Come Between Us," "Turn My Back on You," and "Haunt Me."

1988 - The Sugarcubes released their debut studio album, Life’s Too Good. It features the singles "Birthday," "Coldsweat," and "Deus."

1991 - Texas Governor Ann Richards declares ZZ Top Day.

1993 - New Order released their sixth studio album, Republic. It features the singles "Regret," "Ruined in a Day," and "World (The Price of Love)."

1993 - Terence Trent D’Arby released his third studio album, Symphony or Damn. It features the singles "Do You Love Me Like You Say?," "Delicate," "She Kissed Me," and "Let Her Down Easy."

2000 - Britney Spears released her second studio album, Oops!… I Did It Again. It features the title track, “Lucky,” “Stronger,” and “Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know.”

2001 - London based bank Coutts And Co. turned down applications from members of Oasis to open accounts, on the grounds of the band's bad behavior.

2004 - Animal Collective released their fifth studio album, Sung Tongs.

2005 - The Hold Steady released their second studio album, Separation Sunday. It features “Your Little Hoodrat Friend” and “Stevie Nix.”

2005 - Aimee Mann released her fifth studio album, The Forgotten Arm. It features “Going Through the Motions.”

2005 - The Raveonettes released their second studio album, Pretty In Black. It features “Love in a Trashcan.”

2005 - Nine Inch Nails released their fourth studio album, With Teeth. It features "The Hand That Feeds," "Only," and "Every Day Is Exactly the Same."

2005 - Mike Doughty released his second studio album, Haughty Melodic. It features the singles "Looking at the World from the Bottom of a Well," "I Hear the Bells," and "Unsingable Name."

2006 - Bob Dylan's first hosted radio show aired on XM Satellite Radio, with Dylan playing tracks by Prince, Wilco, Blur, LL Cool J and Billy Bragg, among others.

2008 - Sean 'Diddy' Combs was honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. The 38-year-old dedicated the star to his father, who died in 1972.

2011 - Beastie Boys released their eighth studio album, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. It features the singles "Lee Majors Come Again," "Too Many Rappers," and "Make Some Noise."

2011 - Fleet Foxes released their second studio album, Helplessness Blues. It features the singles "Helplessness Blues," "Battery Kinzie," and "Grown Ocean."

2014 - Bobby Gregg died at age 78. Gregg is best-known for his work as a drummer on several seminal 1960s songs, including Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" and Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence." He was also temporarily a member of the Hawks, which later became known as the Band.

2019 - Vampire Weekend released their fourth studio album, Father of the Bride.

2020 - The Stranglers' keyboard player Dave Greenfield died at the age of 71 after testing positive for coronavirus. He is best-known as a long-standing member of the rock band and penning the music for their biggest hit “Golden Brown.”

2021 - R&B singer Lloyd “Mr. Personality” Price died at the age of 88 in New Rochelle, New York. Price was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
