History Highlight:

Today in 2002, Foo Fighters released their fourth studio album, One by One. The album represents a couple of firsts for the band: 1) it is the first Foo Fighters album to include Chris Shiflett as a band member; and 2) it is the first Foo Fighters album on which Dave Grohl plays no drums, the sticks being handed over entirely to Taylor Hawkins. One by One is also a bit darker and more aggressive than previous releases, because Grohl wanted to capture the energy of Foo Fighters’ live performances. The album includes the singles "All My Life," "Times Like These," "Low," and "Have It All."

1965 - The Beatles' "Yesterday" was the No. 1 single in the U.S., while The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" was No. 10.

1966 - "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys made its debut in the U.S. singles chart in October. It would reach No. 1 by December.

1966 - The Supremes had their first U.S. No. 1 album with The Supremes a Go Go, knocking The Beatles Revolver from the top of the charts. It was the first No. 1 album by an all-women group.

1976 - Bob Seger released his ninth studio album, Night Moves. It was his first with the Silver Bullet Band, a group of Detroit-area musicians that help launched Seger to national acclaim.

1976 - Led Zeppelin released the live soundtrack album The Song Remains the Same, recorded during their 1973 concerts at Madison Square Garden. 

1976 - Patti Smith Group released their second studio album, Radio Ethiopia. It features the singles "Pissing in a River," "Pumping (My Heart)," and "Ask the Angels."

1982 - Musical Youth released their debut studio album, The Youth of Today. It features the singles "Pass the Dutchie," "Youth of Today," "Never Gonna Give You Up," and "Heartbreaker."

1984 - Culture Club released their third studio album, Waking Up with the House on Fire. It features “The War Song,” “The Medal Song,” and “Mistake No. 3.”

1984 - Paul McCartney released his fifth solo album, Give My Regards to Broad Street. It features remakes of many Beatles and Wings hits as well as “No More Lonely Nights.”

1984 - Wham! released their second studio album, Make It Big. It features “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” “Careless Whisper,” “Freedom,” and “Everything She Wants.”

1988 - Phil Collins started a two-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with his cover of "A Groovy Kind Of Love," his sixth U.S. No. 1. The song was originally released by the Mindbenders in 1965, reaching No. 2 in the Billboard charts in May and July of 1966.

1989 - English folk singer, songwriter, poet, and record producer Ewan MacColl died aged 74.

1990 - Pearl Jam played their first-ever concert, held at the Off Ramp Café in Seattle. At the time, the band operated under the name Mookie Blaylock, named for an NBA player; they signed to Epic Records and changed their name to Pearl Jam shortly thereafter. Except for then-drummer Dave Krusen, the rest of the band's lineup is the same as it is today: Eddie Vedder (lead vocals), Mike McCready (lead guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar) and Jeff Ament (bass). 1991 - Matthew Sweet released his third studio album, Girlfriend. It features the singles "Divine Intervention," "Girlfriend," and "I've Been Waiting."

1991 - Del the Funky Homosapien released his debut studio album, I Wish My Brother George Was Here. It features the singles "Sleepin' on My Couch," "Mistadobalina," and "Dr. Bombay."

1991 - Various Artists released Beauty and the Beast: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, featuring music from the Disney animated film. It includes the single "Beauty and the Beast," performed by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.

1991 - Black Sheep released their debut studio album, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing. It features the singles "Flavor of the Month," "The Choice Is Yours," "Strobelite Honey," and "Similak Child."

1993 - Oasis signed a six-album deal with Creation Records.

1998 - For the first time since the 1960s, Bob Dylan performed in his hometown of Duluth. The gig, held at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, sold out in five hours.

1998 - Cher released her 22nd studio album, Believe. It features the singles "Believe," "Strong Enough," "All or Nothing," and "Dov'è l'amore."

1998 - Bob Dylan performed in his hometown of Duluth, Minnesota, for the first time since the 1960s. The gig, held at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, sold out in five hours. According to MPR News’ Bob Kelleher, reporting on Oct. 22, 1998, the concert even drew fans from England. Kelleher spoke to Brian and Pam Clark from Warrington in the north of England, who had seen Dylan in concert dozens of times. “But I've always wanted to see him in the States,” Brian Clarke said. “When I saw Duluth on the tour list, I thought, ‘That's the place.’”

2000 - Pearl Jam appeared at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, celebrating the 10th anniversary of their first live performance as a band.

2001 - Pulp released their seventh studio album, We Love Life. It features the singles "Sunrise," "The Trees," and "Bad Cover Version."

2001 - Incubus released their fourth studio album, Morning View. It features the singles "Wish You Were Here," "Nice to Know You," "Warning," and "Are You In?"

2002 - Christina Aguilera released her fourth studio album, Stripped. It features “Beautiful” and “Dirrty.”

2008 - Guns N' Roses released their first new material since 1999 when the title track of their new album Chinese Democracy was issued as a single. The band - with Axl Rose as the only original member - first performed the song in 2001.

2012 - Taylor Swift released her fourth album, Red. The first single is the No. 1 "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," a kiss-off to an ex she refuses to name.

2012 - Kendrick Lamar released his second studio album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. It features the singles "The Recipe," "Swimming Pools (Drank)," "Backseat Freestyle," "Poetic Justice," and "B***h, Don't Kill My Vibe"

2014 - Kasabian won best live act and best act in the world at the Q Awards held in London, England.

2017 - Australian musician, songwriter and record producer George Young died at age 70. Young, the brother of AC/DC's Angus and Malcolm Young, was a member of the Easybeats and co-wrote the band's 1966 hit "Friday On My Mind". Born in Scotland in 1946, he migrated to Australia with his family as a teenager, forming The Easybeats after he met Dutch-born artist Harry Vanda in Sydney. After the band broke up in 1969, Vanda and Young embarked on a songwriting career that saw the pair produce dozens of hits. They became two of Australia's best-known songwriters, with Young's work including "Love Is In The Air" and "Yesterday's Hero".

2021 - Lana Del Rey released her eighth studio album, Blue Banisters. It features the singles "Blue Banisters," "Arcadia," "Text Book," and "Wildflower Wildfire."

2021 - My Morning Jacket released their ninth studio album, My Morning Jacket. It features the singles "Regularly Scheduled Programming" and "Love Love Love."

2021 - Parquet Courts released their seventh studio album, Sympathy for Life. It features "Plant Life," "Walking at a Downtown Pace," "Black Widow Spider," and "Homo Sapien."

Birthdays:

Singer and guitarist Bobby Fuller, who enjoyed a Top 10 hit in 1965 with his cover of the Crickets’ “I Fought the Law,” was born today in 1942.

Actor and singer Annette Funicello was born on this day in 1942. A first-generation Mouseketeer, Funicello is among the many alumni of the Mickey Mouse Club who went on to later success, a roster that includes Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling, Britney Spears and Keri Russell, among others. Funicello passed away in 2013.

Eddie Brigati of the Young Rascals is 80.

Leslie West, frontman for Mountain, was born today in 1945.

Stiv Bators — singer for Dead Boys and the Lords of the New Church — was born today in 1949.
