Syd Barrett
January 06, 2018
This Saturday marks the anniversary of the birth of Syd Barrett - the original leader of Pink Floyd. A true eccentric, Barrett left Pink Floyd by 1968 and put out his last solo album in 1970 - abandoning rock and roll to become a painter and recluse, living round the corner from his mum's in Cambridge from the mid-'70s until his passing in 2006. Yet his acid-casualty mystique and quirky visionary songs led to a cult following that's carried on for decades. Rather than feature Syd's versions, we'll dig into the influence he's had on multiple generations of artists - playing covers from David Bowie, R.E.M., Jesus and Mary Chain, Love and Rockets, and more, and a few of the many songs that have been written about Syd over the years from Robyn Hitchcock, Paul Weller, and the Television Personalities. It's a tribute to Syd Barrett - this week on Teenage Kicks.
