Clyde Stubblefield and the 'Funky Drummer' beat
May 04, 2019
This week marks the anniversary of the birth of James Brown, and you might not think of James Brown as a Teenage Kicks artist — the only hits he had in the '80s were a collaboration with Afrika Bambaataa and a song from Rocky IV — but you could argue that James Brown was bigger than ever in the late '80s and early '90s — because of sampling! We'll play 'Unity' and 'Living in America', but we'll also delve into the history of maybe the most famous drum break in history — the Funky Drummer, created by Brown's drummer Clyde Stubblefield — it was all over hip hop, and it was the foundation for the Manchester sound as well, so we're going get into that beat and keep it rolling all through the 9 a.m. hour. It's gonna be a journey through a drumbeat this week on Teenage Kicks.
