My Bloody Valentine, 'Loveless'
November 09, 2019
It's not often that you put out your masterpiece, an album lauded by critics as one of the best of the decade, then find yourself dropped by your record label. But that's what happened to My Bloody Valentine after the release of Loveless in November 1991. Heralded for its sonic splendor, leader Kevin Shields took the band to no less than 19 different studios and worked with 18 engineers searching for the perfect sound. He may have found it, as this record ushered in the shoegaze movement and tremolo guitar techniques that still influence bands today. But even with amazing reviews and wow-ing musicians, the record didn't really sell, it nearly bankrupt Creation Records, and the band was dropped. Despite numerous attempts at a followup in the '90s, it would be over 20 years before the next My Bloody Valentine album would be released.
This week on Teenage Kicks, we'll shimmer in the sonic bliss of Loveless by My Bloody Valentine.
