Kate Bush, 'The Whole Story'
January 18, 2020
This week back in 1987, Kate Bush had the No. 1 album in the U.K. with her greatest-hits compilation, The Whole Story.
Greatest-hits records don't typically go to No. 1, but Kate Bush was coming off the success of her Hounds Of Love album, and already an icon in the U.K. Maybe she was the Billie Eilish of her generation? She began writing songs at 11, and her debut single "Wuthering Heights" made her the first female artist to achieve a U.K. No. 1 with a self-written song. All 10 of her studio albums reached the Top 10, and when she returned to the stage for the first time in decades in 2014, all 22 shows of her London residency sold out in 15 minutes.
Kate Bush's ethereal but powerful vocals and innovative art rock has influenced countless artists, including St. Vincent, Florence Welch, Björk, Tori Amos, Robert Smith, and even Prince, who thanked her in the liner notes for Diamonds and Pearls and sang a duet with her.
