Happy Birthday this week to Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett, who sets a high bar for what a musician can do beyond their music career. Becoming a singer while at university finishing up his law degree, Midnight Oil were staunch supporters of the environment; perhaps the only band to score a Top 10 hit in America with a song about Aboriginal rights, and after the hits stopped coming, Garrett was elected to Australian parliament for 10 years, and served as his country's Minister for Education and the Environment.
