The Cars, 'Panorama'
August 15, 2020
Forty years ago today, The Cars released Panorama. Nestled between their multiplatinum Candy-O and Shake It Up, The Cars' third album may not have sold as many copies, but in some ways it was their most adventurous, with Ric Ocasek, Benjamin Orr and the band stretching sonically, building on the New Wave sound made popular with their earlier albums and the emergence at the same time of groups like Blondie, Talking Heads, and The Police. From there, The Cars would turn towards the mainstream, culminating in 1984's Heartbeat City, but 40 years ago, Panorama captured the band at a point of transition that we celebrate this week on Teenage Kicks.
