Talking Heads, 'Remain in Light'
October 10, 2020
As we continue to celebrate albums hitting 40 this year on Teenage Kicks, this week we're featuring an album that remains on every list of the best albums of all time — Remain in Light, by Talking Heads.
Influenced by and incorporating funk and African music to their post-punky new wave, along with free associative lyrics, Remain in Light transcended genres and heralded a new type of stylistic fusion that still inspires generations of musicians. Beginning the album sessions without songs, the band jammed in the studio, and from there, created complex polyrhythmic backing tracks upon which David Byrne and producer Brian Eno layered more sounds and lyrical collages. In the end, it was a timeless triumph, heralded today as one of the most vital albums of that decade or any other.
