Patti Smith, 'Horses'
December 12, 2020
Rock and roll in late 1975 was at a strange point in time: soft rock like Captain & Tenille, country rock like the Eagles, and prog rock like Yes ruled, but in the next year, that would start to change. And one of the catalysts for that change was Horses, the debut album by Patti Smith, released Dec 13, 1975. Moving to New York at the turn of the '70s, Smith was a poet, painter, and performance artist who nearly joined Blue Oyster Cult and eventually formed the Patti Smith Group, who signed to Clive Davis' Arista Records and cut their debut with The Velvet Underground's John Cale producing. Forty-five years after its release, Horses continues to be one of the most inspiring artistic debuts in music history. Horses by Patti Smith is our featured album this week on Teenage Kicks.
