Oasis may have sold the tens of millions of albums, but even they would admit that none of their success would have happened without the breakout success five years earlier for fellow Mancunian rockers The Stone Roses. Their 1989 debut re-imagined the possibility in British guitar rock, and opened the door to the explosion of the Manchester scene and Britpop. But the Roses got into legal battles with their label and each other, and the band didn't last. With lead singer Ian Brown's birthday Sunday, it's a perfect week to look back on their amazing self-titled debut.
