This weekend there’s a birthday for Sheila Escovedo, better known as Sheila E. Raised around the music, her percussionist father Peter Escovedo led his own bands while also playing in Santana, and her uncle is Alejandro Escovedo. Sheila got her start in the ‘70s as an in-demand session and touring percussionist, playing jazz and soul with greats like Herbie Hancock, George Duke and Marvin Gaye, before she moved into a solo career working with Prince, who wrote her first hit, "Glamorous Life." Together they co-wrote her next hit "A Love Bizarre," and after leaving Prince’s team in 1989, she would go on to play with artists like Cyndi Lauper and Ringo Starr, before reconnecting with Prince again in the 2000s. Sheila E – our featured artist this week for Teenage Kicks.
