This year on Teenage Kicks, we’re delving into the history of a lot of albums sharing significant anniversaries — and this week, that’s XTC’s English Settlement, which was released on February 12, 1982. On English Settlement, XTC played less frantic new wave, instead favoring a more pastoral, acoustic direction with complex arrangements, longer songs, and more politically pointed lyrics. They had begun to explore their unabashed love of ‘60s pop and psychedelic rock, and it worked: The album has been acclaimed as their best work, and both the album English Settlement and the single “Senses Working Overtime” hit the Top 10 in the U.K.,the highest charting placements of their career.
