The Sporting Life with Star Tribune's Michael Rand: The Vikings and the Horrible, no-good, very bad day

October 13, 2014

Vikings lose to Detroit
Vikings took the weekend down a notch.
Ann Heisenfelt AP

Every Monday at 8:30am StarTribune sports writer Michael Rand stops into the Morning Show to share the latest news in Sports.

1) Saturday afternoon, the Gophers football team beat Northwestern 24-17 and improved to 2-0 in Big Ten play for the first time in a decade. Next week is homecoming against Purdue and a legit chance to go 3-0. So that was a good start to the weekend ...

2) Saturday night, the Wild -- which clobbered Colorado 5-0 in the season opener two nights earlier -- again shut out the Avalanche, this time 3-0 in Colorado. The Avs were the top team in the Wild's division a year ago, so this bodes well for this season. It was all setting up to be a perfect weekend ...

3) Until the Vikings played. With a chance to re-establish themselves after a brutal loss to the Packers, the Vikings instead lost 17-3 at home to Detroit. The offense was pathetic. The weekend? Pretty much ruined.
