9:30 Coffee Break: [Blank]-and-the-[Blanks] bands
by Jill Riley and Sean McPherson
October 28, 2015
This week at The Current, the new self-titled album by Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats is our Album of the Week. Mac Wilson wrote a thoughtful review of the new record, and you can check it out on our website.
And today, we're particularly excited about Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats because they're in town to play a show at the Turf Club in St. Paul, but not before they stop by The Current for an in-studio session hosted by Mark Wheat that we'll broadcast at 7 p.m.
Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, as a band name, follows a tried-and-true formula in music where a bandleader or front person is named separately from the backing band. There are all kinds of bands that have used this "[blank] and the [blanks]" naming convention, and so many of them have churned out great songs. Let's put together a playlist of tunes by bands with names like that.
So for today's 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you want to hear by bands with a "[blank] and the [blanks]" name? Send us your requests.
Songs Played
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings "Stranger to My Happiness"
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers "Here Comes My Girl"
Sonny Knight and the Lakers "Hey Girl"
Toots and the Maytals "Monkey Man"
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros "Carries On"
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "We No Who U R"
