Described as a power trio from Sydney, Australia, Middle Kids are actually a quartet when they tour. "It's for our live show," frontperson Hannah Joy explains regarding guitarist Pete Covington's presence in the lineup. "Pete comes with us, and he completes the beautiful circle."

Middle Kids — comprising Joy and Covington, along with bassist Tim Fitz and drummer Harry Day — are spending two months touring the United States. Among their many stops is Austin, Texas, for the South By Southwest (SXSW) music festival. "We want to see so much, because there's amazing artists there, so we want to be able to experience that," Joy says, looking forward to SXSW. "We would like some really yummy barbecue, and we also just feel so excited to be able to share our music with more people. Some of the shows sound like they're going to be really fun, so we're just excited to rock."

Although fairly early on in their trajectory, Middle Kids are no strangers to the festival scene, having played the Iceland Airwaves Festival in Reykjavik in November 2016. "I have a feeling it's similar to Austin in terms of the festival just absorbing the whole city," Joy reflects. "It's just like all these venues and streets are full of creativity and people. It's really special."

It's been a special time for this band, who are enjoying touring with some of their musical heroes, Cold War Kids, as they explore and discover the diversity of the United States, which has surprised them. "The vast differences between each state — even in so many different ways in terms of culture and temperature!" Joy says. "But it's been really exciting just going to the different places. I mean, we only have one or two days in each city, but even from that time, we've been able to get a particular vibe."

Likewise, audiences across the country will continue to discover the particular vibe of Sydney's Middle Kids as their tour continues.
