On Dec. 21, 2019, Lizzo made her Saturday Night Live debut, appearing as the musical guest on a new episode hosted by Eddie Murphy.

Musical guests on the show typically perform twice, and Lizzo performed "Truth Hurts" and "Good As Hell." Not only that, Lizzo was frequently referenced throughout the program; for example, in the show's cold open, actor Maya Rudolph — playing Kamala Harris — paraphrased Lizzo lyrics, and in the opening monologue, both Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock said, "My kids love Lizzo."

For her performance of "Truth Hurts," Lizzo was joined onstage by a musician dressed as and playing in the style of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the rock-and-roll pioneer who, it was recently announced, will be posthumously recognized with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

To kick off her performance of "Good As Hell," Lizzo shared an affirming message with the audience. "Happy holidays, y'all," Lizzo said. "Be kind to one another — but most importantly, be good to yourself."
