Temples bring their big sound into The Current studio

Although Temples' distinctive sound may invite comparisons to other bands and eras, for guitarist and vocalist James Bagshaw, Temples' songs and arrangements are all about trusting their creative instincts. "It's one of those things were you just follow your train of thought, really," he says. "There might be some subconscious element of attaching it to a sound that's came before, but generally, I think you hear the space in the song and what should fit in that space. It's almost like a musical jigsaw in your head, I think. We certainly do."
In town for a sold-out show at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis, Temples visited The Current to play songs from their latest album, 'Hot Motion,' and to talk about the record with host Mac Wilson.
The lush arrangements and big-sounding guitars and keys give Temples a lot of room to create big sounds. "I think generally, we sort of know instinctively whether something should be lo-fi and echoey, or in your face and like a broken, fuzzy tape machine," Bagshaw explains. "It's one of those things where you follow your instinct, really."
