Today in 1977, the first all-women punk rock group The Slits made their live debut opening for The Clash at the Roxy Club in London. The Slits' 1979 debut album Cut has been called one of the defining releases of the post-punk era.

While bands like the Clash and the Ramones receive a lot of credit for pioneering the punk movement in the 1970s, the work of women in the genres of punk and post-punk is sometimes overlooked, despite the efforts of such groundbreaking artists as Patti Smith, Debbie Harry and many others. The 1990s brought the Riot Grrrl movement, which combined punk rock, feminism and politics, and included such bands as Bikini Kill and Babes in Toyland. Today we're shining a spotlight on the women artists who embraced the DIY ethic of the punk movement, writing music that broke from the mainstream and wasn't afraid to thumb its nose at the establishment.
