The 64th Annual Grammy Awards are set to take place this coming weekend, the highlight of which is a live broadcast of several award presentations on Sunday, April 3, at 7 p.m. on CBS. Trevor Noah is the host, and the evening will include live performances by current nominees Jon Batiste, H.E.R, Nas, Chris Stapleton and many others.

The three most prestigious awards to be given out Sunday night include Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. These categories sound pretty similar, but there are fine distinctions: Record of the Year is essentially "recording" of the year; that is, the award is given to a single track and recognizes the not only the artist’s performance but also the work of producers, engineers and other people behind the scenes involved in mixing and mastering the track. Album of the Year is given to the best album, defined by the Recording Academy as a collection of at least five different tracks with a total playing time of 15 minutes or more, or a total playing time of at least 30 minutes with no minimum track requirement (think classical music recordings on that second description). Finally, Song of the Year is a songwriter's award — it recognizes the person or people who composed what the Recording Academy's voters determine is the year's best song.

As one might expect, the roster of artists who are nominated in these categories is amazing: Jon Batiste, Billie Eilish, Brandi Carlile, H.E.R., ABBA, Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift to name just a handful.
