Friday is Willie Nelson's birthday. The longtime country singer-songwriter turns 89, and he continues to release new music and to tour to this day.

Throughout his lengthy career, Nelson has been involved in many projects, and one of them is a subgenre of country music known as "outlaw country," which was a reaction to the polished production of the Nashville sound. Collaborating with such artists as Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Jessi Colter, David Allan Coe and others, outlaw country brought back a rootsier sound and more personal lyrics in songwriting. The movement has continued to inspire artists to this day; notably, supergroup the Highwomen as well as artists like Chris Stapleton, Margo Price, Buffalo Nichols and Jason Isbell have all taken inspiration from outlaw country. 

But the outlaw country movement was only a glimpse into Willie Nelson's collaborative work. He's also released numerous duets with a range of artists.
