It was 50 years ago today that David Bowie released his fifth studio album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Ziggy Stardust is described as an androgynous, alien rock star who came to Earth before an impending apocalyptic disaster to deliver a message of hope. After accumulating a large following of fans and being worshipped as a prophet, Ziggy eventually dies as a victim of his own fame and excess. The character was meant to symbolize an over-the-top rock star and serve as a commentary on a society in which celebrities are worshipped.

Ziggy Stardust quickly became an legendary figure in pop culture. Who can forget the iconic red mullet, gold astral sphere makeup, and flared-legged jumpsuits? Bowie, along with Prince, The Beatles, and Bono are just a few who have delved into the world of concept albums and personas. Whether the character represents a mirrored image of society or provides a completely new perspective to the world we live in, alter egos add dimension to music and allow for a sort of escapism for both artist and listener. For today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you want to hear from musicians with alter egos?
