Kacey Musgraves has released her cover of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” a day before Baz Luhrmann’s film Elvis gets its release in the United States.
The film, out Friday, June 24, features Austin Butler in the role of Presley and Tom Hanks as Presley’s enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Musicians Yola and Gary Clark Jr. have roles in the film as Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, respectively.
The music video for Musgraves’s rendition of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” is assembled from clips from Luhrmann’s film; the images combined with Musgraves’s mournful delivery create a result that — despite the song’s popularity at weddings and among fans of Sunderland AFC, for example — is truly heartbreaking.
In addition to the recording by Musgraves, the Elvis soundtrack includes music by Jack White, Jazmine Sullivan, Denzel Curry, Doja Cat and others. Butler provides vocals on the diegetic music when he is performing as the younger Elvis, while a mix of actual Presley vocals are combined with Butler’s for filmed performances depicting Elvis’s later life.
