Surly Brewing to host 30th anniversary Minnesota Record Show

“Since the beginning of Surly, music has always been a part of what we do,” says Hannah Vogel, who is the hospitality experience manager at Surly Brewing in Minneapolis. “We've always come from a place of creativity and inspiration, and a lot of that is music.”
Surly already has a reputation for hosting live music and DJ events in its beer hall and garden as well as at Surly Festival Field. Those music connections at Surly will be further demonstrated on Saturday when the Minnesota Record Show celebrates its 30th anniversary with an all-day event at Surly Brewing, where 30 vendors will set up at Surly’s Scheid Hall, selling vinyl, CDs, posters, vintage t-shirts and other music memorabilia.
Vogel says that Surly had originally hoped to host the record show in 2020, but those plans were scuppered when COVID-19 put all live events on hold. With the Record Show event on Saturday, those two-year-old hopes are finally coming to fruition. “It really meshes with our current audience of beer lovers, music lovers, and people that, you know, self-express through music and creativity,” Vogel says.
The Minnesota Record Show was co-founded by Rich Shelton and by the late James “Hymie” Peterson, the namesake of Hymie’s Vintage Records in Minneapolis. The record show convenes six times a year, and it is the largest and longest-running record show in Minnesota. Having got its start at the Uptown VFW, the record show has been hosted more recently by the Hook & Ladder Theatre and Lounge in the Longfellow neighborhood. Having the record show at Surly represents an expansion for the long-running vinyl get-together. “We're not [the MN Record Show’s] only venue, which is great, but we are a new venue,” Vogel says, “so we're happy to partner with them.”

The Minnesota Record Show runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 9. Admission is $2, and the event is all ages.
Vogel will be attending of course, not only in an official capacity but as someone who has newly become a vinyl enthusiast. “It is so fun to meet all of these folks that have been collecting vinyl for decades,” Vogel says. “For me, I try not to go in with expectations of what I'm trying to find. But to go in and learn about something new, and say to vendors, ‘I want you to recommend something for me that maybe I've never heard of.’ So I try and go in with low expectations and come out with something brand new.”
In addition to the Minnesota Record Show, Surly Brewing, in cooperation with First Avenue, will be hosting 11 outdoor concerts at Surly Festival Field, starting with Mitski on Thursday, July 14. A full rundown can be found at surlybrewing.com/events.
