Today is the National Day of France, commonly referred to as Bastille Day in English speaking countries. The holiday recognizes the anniversary of the the storming of Bastille, a military fortress and political prison, on July 14 1789. The fall of Bastille was a major event as it signaled the beginning of the French Revolution against the harsh rule of the monarchy. Celebrations are held throughout France on this day, including one that has been reported as "the oldest and largest military parade in Europe". It’s held on the Champs-Élysées in Paris in front of the President of the Republic, along with other French officials and foreign guests.
As we recognize the Fête nationale française, let’s show our appreciation for the music that the French have provided . For today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs from French artists would you like to hear?
