Yesterday marked the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15). The celebration was first established by the U.S. Congress in 1968 to honor the achievements of Hispanics. In 1988 Congress expanded the holiday to a 31-day period. The resolution calls “on the people of the United States, especially the educational community, to observe National Hispanic Heritage Month with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the celebrations of Independence Day in many Latin American countries—including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (September 15), Mexico (September 16), and Chile (September 18)—as well as with Día de la Raza (October 12).

Let’s celebrate the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting the music of artists that we love. For today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs by Hispanic/Latinx artists do you want to hear?
