On this day in 1921, American DJ Alan Freed was born. Freed would become an influential figure in music and radio. As a disc jockey, producer, and promoter, Freed helped spread the importance of rock and roll music throughout North America in the 1950’s. He popularized the phrase “rock and roll” on mainstream radio. He also played a major part in bridging the gap of segregation among young Americans by playing black artists on his radio programs and arranging live concerts with racially mixed audiences. In 1986, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Rock and roll” has since become a staple in modern terminology. It’s commonly referenced in the music itself! For today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you want to hear that include the term “rock and roll”?
